One of my favorite liberals

No, this is not a political post per se. I just happened to stumble across this sweet speech made by Barack Obama regarding television and kids. Barack is a Democratic Senator from Illinois and ever since I saw him on Oprah once (yes I admit I'm a big fan of Oprah) I can't help but like the guy! Anyway good food for thought, and I commend Senator Obama for taking a stand on this important issue!

As for us Heldts, we don't turn the TV on much; in fact our antennae (that only pulls in 3 channels anyway) has been broken for months and we haven't fixed it yet! So much of TV is yucky, and it's a great way to waste a lot of time. Lately we've been doing a lot of reading after the kids go to bed. I'm reading Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" for the very first time (it's awesome!) and Kevin's reading C.S. Lewis' "Weight of Glory" (for probably the tenth time!)

Any good books anyone's read lately???

The Irrestiable Revolution by Shane Claiborne, The Kite Runner, Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger, anything Dora the Explorer and Jacks Life: A memory of CS Lewis. All good, some read multiple times...a day. :)

Oh I am wanting to get the Rich Christians one; how was it?????

Awesome-I have read through most of it. It starts off with lots of statistics, which start to feel old, but then in the third chapter jumps into scripture and really really challenges you to be living out your faith. Definatly life changing. In a good way. I am going to send you an email right now, I have been meaning to!

Thank you for posting that speech. I may have to blog about it too. We are a TV free family and I always love to find great resources like this that help explain why.

I LOVE wasting time in front of the TV, but I cannot stand Oprah, that woman rubs me the wrong way for some reason. Although I will occasionaly tune in if somethhing catches my eyes. All the books I love are written for sixth graders, sorry. I was always looking for the next great read aloud!

HA! I love it! I have to say I love Oprah!

And hey 6th grade books are just fine too. I loved the book "Holes" (and the movie was pretty good too!)

I am sure you won't be interested, but I have a brand new HDTV air antenna that I don't use anymore that I could send you for the cost of shipping. (I know, bad big brother influence)

This is Mike. I just don't want to re-log in.
