First fancy haircut

A few weeks ago I took Anna to get her hair cut at a salon--for the first time. The kids had a ball coloring with chalk, watching a video, and Anna got to sit on a pink scooter during the cut. They each got a lollipop at the end.

I love her hair short, but I miss it long too.
As we were sitting in the fancy children's salon, I couldn't decide if I thought the salon was cute, or over-the-top for a child. For some reason it seemed kinda creepy to me and like it was trying to make kids into adults. (That's fine if you think that I overthink things. I'm sure that I do!)
Not to mention the cut cost nearly as much as I'LL pay for my OWN haircut. (Yes I refuse to pay more than about $25 for a haircut. I'll pass on the blow dry/style if I have to!) I'd hoped to spend $10 or less, but because I found out that Fantastic Sam's charges $15 for kids to get their hair cut (what a scam!), I assumed I wouldn't be able to find places that charged less. SO I went to this fancy schmancy kids salon.
Well, according to my subsequent Google research, some places DO charge less, and that is precisely where we'll be going next time. :) To me, the treat and excitement about going to a salon (especially for a kid!) is just in going at all--Anna doesn't HAVE to sit on a scooter to have her hair done. If I could, I would do it myself at home, like my mom used to cut mine.
Sorry if it seems like I'm being WAY overly philosophical about a child's hair. But these were my musings while I sat there. There are so many things we feel "entitled to" in our society of affluence. I think the art of being content is a tough one to master, especially being surrounded by so much stuff and so many opportunities. I want to give my kids a simple upbringing and an appreciation for simple things. Not to mention if we can live with less, we can give more.
ANYway, that is the story of Anna's haircut. It even passed her (long-hair-loving) daddy's approval. Now if I can find time to get MINE cut...

I think that I'd be selfish with the haircut thing as a mom. I'd cut the kids hair myself...and the husbands hair...and spend the extra on my hair! :-) I guess that defeats the purpose huh? Although this is all hypothetical thinking...who knows what I would really do. But yes, to me it seems silly to spend a ton of money on a kids haircut when they can't even appreciate what it really looks like. I remember being 6 years old and having the Supercuts people cut my banks about an inch from the top of my fore head. My mom was horrified. I asked how long it would take for them to grow, my mom told me, and I was goood to go. I didn't care! :-)

I bet you could trim Anna's hair yourself. It's so straight. You should try it next time and only take off like an inch. Then if it comes out terrible you can take her to a real place and have them fix it...without it being super short. It's not too hard really.

yes, haircuts are hard. we have a little system where we can cut their hair mostly at home and then take them to supercuts only sometimes. just for the 3 guys to get haircuts is $45 excluding any tip. so, the monthly haircuts they really require get kind of costly. i also don't get mine cut frequently because i hate having to spend so much money on my hair! i'd rather have a new pair of pants or something. i love what you said about living simply and learning not to feel entitled to certain things.

So where's her new look? You must post a picture. My dd has beautiful LONG hair that I just trim every once in a while, but the tangles are too much...i'm considering a shorter style if it can promise no more knots!

I don't know if you've found a place to get your hair cut yet, but I could give you a couple of good (reasonable) recommendations if you need them. I missed seeing you girls last night!! Here's to hoping this ms passes SOON! I have fun keeping up with you guys via your blog here.

If you want to try my girl we can meet at a park nearby her salon and I can hang with the kids while you get your hair cut. I got mine cut today and she was done in a half hour. She charges $26, and she listens.

So where are the "after" pictures?

I'm too cheap to take the kids to get regular haircuts and since I can do a tolerable job with the boys they only get professional haircuts for the first day of school and for their birthday. Where I get my haircut they do free bang trims so Eliannah gets bangs trimmed whenever I go in and has only had 3 professional haircuts (I would do it myself but she's too wiggly and longer hair is easier to make mistakes on than the boys'). When I figured out that we were spending- about $12 per kids every six weeks, plus the $17 that I spent on my own hair cut and the $10 Phillip spent on his it was working out to around $63-$70 depending on how generous a tip we left I decided to buy a nice, quality Wahl hair trimmer and make it into more of an event less often. (BTW some beauty colleges charge $5 for kids and $10 for adults, it's worth checking out.)

I haven't paid for a haircut since early 1997! Me and the boys are Daddy-performed clipper haircut kind of guys. And back in college my buddy Darin hooked me up with his mad beautician skillz (heh heh) when I branched out to the "spikey" look for a few years. Here's to low maintenance hair care!

I cut Andy and Henry's hair, although I do have to go get my hair done. The girl I go to charges $35, which isn't terrible, but I agree with Joy that I'd rather buy a pair of pants! But, it's one of those inevitabilities of life, I guess. I would love to go to a Fantastic Sams kind of place, but the main issue for me is the huge turn around. You never know who or what you are going to get! And paying $20 for a bad haircut is a bigger waste of money than paying $40 for a good haircut! I also don't know quite how I feel about the fancy kids' places. They're cute, but is it insulting to your kid to think that they MUST be entertain at ALL times???
