Is this inflation?

Is it seriously nearly $7 for a large soda at the movie theater?! Today I took the kids to another free movie, Horton Hears a Who. We had a blast, and I was all prepared to treat myself to a big soda and maybe get us some popcorn, too, until I saw the prices. Sheesh.

Let's just say I may be making a stop at 7-11 on our way to the movies next week. Really, fountain drinks and popcorn are probably some of the cheapest snacks you can sell. And they're charging a small fortune! (I think Kevin may be in the wrong line of work.)

Is this what happens when you abstain from going to the movies for five years? I seriously feel like an 80 year old woman..."Back when I was your age, a drink at the movies cost $2..."

Isn't it terrible?! Our family sees maybe 3 movies a year in the theater, and we (more like I, ha ha) just won't buy into the whole snack purchasing thing. Yet it never ceases to amaze me when I look around at all the other families sitting there with the huge popcorn buckets, candy boxes & gigantic sodas. I can't help but think of the not only the cost, but the calories...sheesh! And then I get sad when I think of how for the same price you could have fed a 3rd world family for weeks, if not months...So basically it's super depressing to go to a movie with me, ha ha.

Well, now I'm being a Negative Nelly, so I'll stop. :) Everyone deserves a treat once in awhile, & movie popcorn sure is YUMMY!

Tee hee hee

I think even $2 is a 175% mark up on the actual 25 cents it takes to make the stuff!

IF and when we go to the movies, we always do a stop at Walmart...I bring a big purse and sneak in some sodas and candy. (They won't let you just waltz in with a fountain drink in your hand). I feel bad sneaking stuff in...like I'm stealing from them...but then I see the prices they are charging and my guilt instantly fades!!!

I used to sneak in soda and snacks but now our local theater sells you a t-shirt (about $15)and for the rest of the year you can get a small (is big enough for hubby and I) popcorn if you bring the shirt. You can also buy a promotional cup (the large ones) and get soda for $1.00 so for $2.00 we get popcorn and soda and I just sneak in the candy. This is a very large theater (I go to it's cheap cousin too) and what I don't get is why so many don't take advantage of this...I see people paying $4.00 per soda and $5.00+ for pocorn...same soda and popcorn we are getting for $2.00...buy the freaking t-shirt for pete's sake!LOL Maybe it's our frugal nature...or our justification for going...we love going!LOL

Going to walmart for your snacks is hardly any better!

My mom and Patrick went to the free movies yesterday and paid $7.50 for a large popcorn (the small was $7) and $7 for a soda. It's crazy! That's why I netflix.

We bring our own drinks. :) I did buy a popcorn today but when that happens I always bring bowls for each of the kids to hand it out in so they have their own little stash in front of them. I admit I thought of getting the free refill (large popcorn has free refills) on the way out just to make the most of the $7.50 it cost us!

We went today, too!! My kids were scared by the vulture...and were really afraid for Horton when he was crossing the bridge. Poor little 'pouch-schooled' kids!

And...we went totally free. No snacks for us! :) I'm cheap that way.

Hey, I want to go to the movies with all of you! Alas, we have no free movies in my smallish town. My college girls and I went to see My Sister's Keeper and cried more than we ever have at a movie. Our faces were all red and we were embarrassed to leave the theater - but it was fun to be with my girls.

I can't believe it costs over $20 just to walk in at some places. But...this is crazy...at some theaters, I'm actually old enough for the senior discount (55). It's not that much of a discount, but it helps. We actually live where there is a $3.50 fee - haven't been there yet, so don't know what the prices are for the snacks. But at least some theaters will let you bring in certain things (couldn't bring in my Starbuck's, though). So hope you figure out a cheaper way to go; I'm sure the kids enjoy it. I did that when my girls were younger, but as you said, the prices were a bit cheaper back then. I remember (hehe) the $1 weekend movies.
