bringing them home

I've had people ask me in the past how they might help orphaned children, if they themselves are not adopting. There are lots of ways, but one way is by supporting a family who is currently adopting.

I'm participating in a walk-a-thon on Saturday for a sweet, sweet friend who will be bringing home two children from Ethiopia later this summer. The costs of international adoption can be high, just like giving birth to a biological child is high--but without health insurance.

If any of you would like to donate and help bring these precious kids home, please email me for more information!

it's joy--i'm under cade's login. it's so good to know that it's possible to help families with adoption costs. i wasn't really aware of that option before. thanks for enlightening me!

I honestly don't mean to be rude, but would you mind if i asked approximately how much it cost to bring your boys home? I just haven't the slightest clue what the figures might be. I am newly married, and my husband and i have recently started discussing adoption in our future. I plan to be a stay at home momma, and my husband earns a good salary, but i didn't know if it would be enough for adoption, you know? Any info you have would be appreciated! :)

Hi Leila,

We adopted our sons 2.5 years ago, and the entire adoption for both boys (including travel, homestudy, fingerprints, everything) was $25,000.

You don't pay it all at once, and depending on income sometimes there are grants available. Some employers offer subsidies, and the federal government offers a tax credit. Good luck, and please feel free to email with any questions. (And I'm missing California like crazy right now! Whereabouts are you?)

Thanks for the info! 25k sounds pretty reasonable, and that's for TWO kids! I definitely hope to look into adoption in the future. We are living in woodland hills right now, but may be moving closer to san diego for my husband's job.

Btw, i noticed you were a dave matthew's fan. Not sure if you've ever seen "Because of Winn-Dixie," but he has a fairly big role in that movie (and yes, he sings and plays the guitar in it!). It's a wonderful, family-friendly flick that you guys might enjoy. Such a sweet story. Take care! :)

Leila, just to add a detail, the federal adoption income tax credit (i.e. not a deduction but actually reduces your final tax bill dollar for dollar) is pretty sizeable. For 2007, it is $11,390 per child (Increasing to $11,650 for 2008). And you can carry over any unused portion for up to 5 years.
