And it begins...

Anna started her new 4s and 5s Sunday School class on Sunday. On our way home from church, out of the blue, she earnestly asks me if she can bring her own Bible to Sunday School next week. Because all the other kids bring THEIR own Bibles. And she didn't have one.

WOW. Could I have felt ANY worse that my kid was Bible-less? (And are these kids even able to read yet?!)

Then she brought it up again tonight. I assured her that next week she could take one of the two small kids Bibles we have, with a handle for carrying. Nope, she told us we HAVE TO GO TO THE BOOKSTORE to buy a Bible like the OTHER kids had, "with Jesus and his friends on the cover."

Um...isn't she four?! Isn't it too soon to be thinking your mom's ideas are totally dorky? (Come on now, a Bible with a handle--it doesn't get much more practical than that!) So we assured her that we would send some sort of Bible with her on Sunday (most likely one with a handle), and take a look at the ones the other kids have, so we can know what kind she wants. She seemed satisfied, and informed me that she'd ask her friends if it'd be okay if she showed her mommy and daddy their Bibles.

Whew. Something tells me that fifty years ago, parents weren't having to deal with this sort of Bible snobbery!

Just so you know in the 4s and 5s class they really stress bringing a Bible to church and the kids get an extra sticker on their attendance chart if they do - I don' believe any of them read yet but it's a great habit to start! Zak made such a big deal about it when he was in that class that I started bringing my own Bible to church instead of using the pew Bibles. Eliot also got on board and started bringing a spanish new testament to the 2s and 3s just to be like his big brother (the spanish one I have has a blue cover and matched his favorite "church shirt").

yeah i know grace makes a huge deal about bringing your own Bible to church--didn't realize that applied to four year olds that don't read!

at any rate if they stress it in the class i'll send her with one so she won't feel bad, and so we won't be rebels. :) on a side-note i hope to teach my kids that loving and thirsting for God and His word is so much more than carrying your own Bible to church--and that we should never use it as a litmus test for if someone does. (stepping off of soapbox now. back to our regular programming. :) and jacqueline i'm totally impressed with the spanish Bible--very multicultural! :))

Well, Brianna, I thought that I would also note (and this has nothing to do with a Bible except that I don't give stickers for bringing a Bible to class:-) ) that Anna was fabulous in the 3rd service Sunday school. I sort of thought that she would be shy but she was super interested in the story and the lesson and was super friendly. I had to tell her like 4times to sit back down on her carpet square (which is a good thing) becuase she was so interested in the lesson and wanted to be nice and close to see everything that was going on! What a sweet girl! She is a great addition to the class.

So funny!

Once she gets her new Bible will you share what you chose? I'm a bit overwhelmed with the "children's bible" choices sometimes...

When I taught the 2's and 3's class, I encouraged the kids to bring bibles as well...not because they woudl be more holy, but because I wanted them to somehow begin to grasp where these Bible stories were coming from. Not just fun stories with neat characters, or stories from the latest Veggie Tales DVD, but stories directly from God, which they also had access to. Okay, so they couldn't even spell their own name, but you gotta start somewhere?! :)

(By the way, the 2/3 bible snobbery came in the form of the little pink and blue Bible that Grace gives each newborn baby!)
