Here

Right there, on the left. Do you see it? (Click on the picture to see it bigger.) I think it may be a disfigured hand. Which of course is fine, but so strange that it's randomly in the photo!

y'all have too much time on your hands! I think it's just a stuffed toy used to add texture or dimension to the photo. Maybe an old-fashioned rag-doll...

I say a duck or swan of some sort?

yes, i've investigated further (call me nancy drew) and have decided that it is definitely some sort of ancient pottery. i think it's supposed to go along with the theme being explored in the open book..."In the streets of Rome" ... what do you think? how's that for a theory? :)

OK, here's what it really is. It's someone's personal photo, taken of books on a bookshelf that is made to look like a person holding the shelf. Make sense? The hand you see is a wooden carving of a man's right hand, reaching down to hold the shelf of books. There's one on the other side as well, but it's cropped out of the picture.
Now, go to bed and feel better soon!

I have no idea what it is, but I am now curious too and hope you make the call today so we can all sleep more soundly tomorrow night. :)

Looks like you missed the comment by John on the last post:

"It's a clay figure, made by an elementary-age student, of a flightless bird..."

It's a dried red-clay figure of a penguin. And, actually, Sonlight has received much correspondence regarding that image [laughing]. Many curious moms [smile].
